Forestville: Andy groomed the entire system from the ponds to Co Rd 510. He left the classic tracks untouched. We need more snow to improve the tracks. However, with cold nights and sub-freezing highs the snow has remained quite “young” for its age. All trails are open and there is no ice whatsoever. Light air, sun and perfect temperatures today and a good looking six day forecast will keep us in good skiing for some time. I don’t care how thick a base if the part I touch is good. I am reminded of an old salt’s comment when asked how deep it was. We were on the Chesapeake and a long way from any shore. As a small boy on the big ocean I figured it would be deep too. I was assured “there’s a powerful lot a (sic) water in the Chesapeake… but its spread powerful thin.”. Think snow.
Saux Head: All trails were skate lane groomed on the 1st. Classic tracks remain in good shape.
Snow Bike Trails: The entire north system groomed w the SnowDogs on 12/30. The South trails require more snow for grooming to be warranted. I did bump into a large group of riders on the North Trails yesterday and they were all smiles. I expect there are some slick spots and watch out on wood bridge decks.
Fit Strip: The Fit Strip was roll packed but is still very thin. Neil says rock skis are needed if you go out. Think snow.
WTLGR: I arrive at the trail head yesterday to a festive scene. The big parking lot was nearly full and the din of conversation made one feel as if joining a tail gate party (socially distanced to be sure). As I am clicking into my skis I notice everyone around me has on the rust red Noque’ hat; there must have been half a dozen. Did I miss the memo? Was I left off the list? It felt like the time I mixed up party invitations. I remember it like yesterday; I show up to a pajama party and everyone is in black tie. You know the feeling. It turns out it was a “come as you are” party and now everyone thinks I am in pajamas at 8 PM! I was so embarrassed. As it turns out, the skiers were unrelated and they swore it was a coincidence. With over twenty hats in the rotation it seems quite unlikely and I remain unconvinced. Capped in my “hunter’s orange” Noque’ hat, I slinked off to one of the less traveled trails hoping not to be caught under dressed again.
See you out there,
Sondo
(note: We only allow factual stories in this report. The only factual part of the above story is being surrounded by rust red hats. The grooming report writer has only been to one pajama party in the last 20 years and Yooper come-as-you-are parties are rarely dominated by black tie. Please know, if there is a tall tail in these annals, it is fact checked to be true unless otherwise noted.) ed.
