| Forestville: No grooming again last night. Temperatures fell to the lower 30s(f) but not freezing. However, the fully transformed snow allows water to drain quickly so skiing may be quite nice and the base may support you. Please don’t ski if you are leaving deep ruts. If you do go out, please let us know and send pictures.

Way too Long Grooming Report:
One can only clean the garage so many times per year so the to-do list tends to get shorter in a pandemic. I was not around for the big one in the early 20th century but my grandmother spoke of it. I was brought back to those days during one of the projects that comes after the garage and sock drawers are in order. I expect many of you are going through the piano bench as we speak. I checked the piano’s humidifier water and pulled out the 440hz tuning fork; middle A was still right on. Then, I began looking for something I could play (ie, in a simple key with not so many notes). Of course, most of the sheet music was printed far before 440hz became the standard for middle A. Now, the Grooming Report Writer’s Guild squashes rumors and conspiracies when given the chance. You both must recall we dispelled the St. Urho story as well as the Roman Empire standard axel length history as well as countless other similar nonsense. I am here to tell you there is no truth behind any of the conspiracy theories on why the Stuttgart pitch won out over Verdi’s 423hz or why it changed from the baroque pitch. Of course we are always open to new evidence.
In any case, back to the piano bench project. Not only are there Ilyich Tchaikovsky first editions and many others that predate the standardization to 440hz, I came across a souvenir play bill for a work written by locals and performed in the theaters of Hancock, Ishpeming, Escanaba, Menominee, Marquette and Calumet. I am including a picture of the play bill’s front page and one showing the cast in the historic Calumet Opera Hall in its hay day. More importantly, I am including a full page ad for one of Bobby Hupp’s first models. The future was bright; he was barely three years into what became one of the country’s leading car companies. Of course there was a dealership in Calumet. My grandmother loved her Hupmobile. Bobby expanded the line and made bigger cars right before the crash in 1929 and they never recovered. Let us work to keep our local businesses here so future grooming report writers can wax philosophic gas on endlessly on how they all survived this difficult time in 2020.
Saux Head: I spoke with Craig yesterday and skiing was quite nice. There is a bare spot on the Pep-O-Day and one is beginning at the top of the Beast major hill but most trails are still well covered.
Big Bay Pathway: Trails are still well covered but classic tracks are likely gone. Good skiing will be in each day’s Goldie Locks Zone.
Fit Strip: Grooming has been suspended. Expect some bare spots.
Snow Bike Trails: Trails may be soft today. Keep an eye on your artifact. Please don’t be the guy/gal that cuts up the trail when it is too warm. We could have great snow bike trails in the higher elevations for weeks if we are all careful. I haven’t seen any of the trails so let us know what you find. Pictures will be appreciated.
