December 10, 2019 Grooming Report

Forestville: Andy took the Bombi out again this morning to groom and track set the Noque’ and Animoosh to the pine plantation.

Not much about grooming but rather about going skiing: Inertia is a powerful force. When I put on my space suit to snow blow the drive and walk way yesterday I couldn’t even tell it was cold. You know, when you go out to perform what my son calls, “married guy shoveling”, you plan to spend a fair amount of time at the task. With about 5 layers, a balaclava and goggles, you are in a little room running equipment. Only after the task did I realize it was really cold. Skiing up until now was so easy. It is like mountain climbing in ideal weather; who needs a bivy sack or wands?

Laying on the couch is easy once you get everything set up. You pre-stage the aerosol cheese next to the couch and know when Gunsmoke re-runs are on; you can do it day after day. However, once you have your skies ready and have your clothes all lined up it is just as easy to go skiing instead. You can do it day after day; sort of. Up until yesterday we would simply put on two thin layers with a vest and be done with it. We haven’t seen a day where there is a cold weather prep factor. Galileo and Descartes didn’t have very good press agents because we always think of Newton when inertia is discussed and this is clearly an inertia force. Of course, I expect they all had equipment prep teams so this cold weather prep was not even considered one of the forces acting upon the human inertia.

Now it is -9f this morning but I have broken the friction blocking my clothes (and more importantly, mental) inertia. If I thought either of you would read this all the way to the end I would be feeling guilty for not skiing yesterday. See you out there today.

Saux Head: Tim and John rolled the south and west sections of the trail system yesterday and will complete the rolling of the north and east sections Wednesday. Plan to groom on Thursday. There are no classic tracks today and skate lanes will be a little soft.

Big Bay Pathway: After a strong volunteer showing this weekend, we have the Big Bay Pathway near ready for setting classic tracks. We have completed brushing from the storms on Hidden Grin Loop, and with fresh snow, will be in good shape. Tracks will be set as soon as this next snow event is over.

Fit Strip: Fit Strip was roll packed yesterday so skate skiers should have fair to good skiing today. Classic tracks will be set as soon as snow depths in the City permit.

Snow Bike South Trails:
As of this morning Jerimiah reports: Granite point, main, Greywalls, Jeep plowed this morning. Variable conditions, air down.

As of Saturday morning the report included:
• East of 553
• Mt Mesnard loop (granite/jeep) & chapel spur in good condition, 4-6 psi.
• Cx race course for today 3-5 psi, occasional soft spots.
• West of 553
• Main loop (benson/freak/smiley) groomed and getting good, 3-4.5 psi.
• Other loops remain closed by trees for now, storm recovery continues.

Snow Bike North Trails: As of last weekend most sections of North Trails have been regroomed to pack down the traffic and loose snow, with The Pine – Penstock – BLP Rocks loop firmest for biking and other activities.

Equipment and Facilities Update: If you have been to Forestville for the early November skiing you will have seen lots going on. We are expanding the trail head and will be done soon. We plan to be open before Christmas. New grooming equipment has been purchased for both skiing and snow bike grooming. We will detail equipment and trail head facilities over the next few weeks.
