Grooming January 15, 2020

Today’s report is brought to you by Northern Michigan University:     Northern Michigan University is a trail builder sponsor on the Noque’.  Our section of trail from Forestville to the Tourist Park crosses NMU property and some of it is the most spectacular terrain and scenery (see the Way Too Long Grooming Report below for picture and comments).   Without the support of folks like NMU, we would not have the great trails we have come to expect.  If you see her, say thanks.

Trail Builder sections are available.  Please visit www.noquetrails.org and follow the links.  You too can be feted in an up coming grooming report.

Forestville:   Bombi grooming the Noque’ and Animoosh to 14k.  The plan was to cover all the high traffic trails until Andy experienced an equipment failure.  He is busy working on the Bombi.  Plans to cover all trails to the Tourist Park are on hold as a result.  Skiing should still be excellent even on the ungroomed trails provided yesterday’s near freezing temperatures did not transform the snow.

Way too Long Grooming Report:

Skiers should be taking advantage of the trail to the Tourist Park and NMU.  It is not always open but it is always spectacular.  Skiers are rewarded with a series of major hills (per FIS homologation rules, over 98.43 feet of elevation gain) and of course the corresponding thrilling down hills.  In addition, if you are not bent over in search of more oxygen, you get to look at spectacular scenery such as the hills north of the ponds or the giant stands of red and white pines.  Yesterday the pond crossings were smooth, slush free and well snow covered; not always the case.  Be aware that grooming is not as frequent on this section of trail skiers may find an uneven or unforgiving surface.  This trail had not been freshly groomed yesterday but the light snow from the day before was as creamy frosting half an inch thick.  It was hard to beat.  It may be great again if yesterday’s near 32f didn’t transform the snow.  Enjoy.

Saux Head:  Tim groomed and reset the track, 1/13/2020.

Big Bay Pathway:  The Hidden Grin Loop was groomed Friday the 10th.

If you do ski please be aware, this is classic only and you may find rough areas. The terrain quite rugged and does need a good deal of snow just to cover. Please let us know what you find.  I have not been on the Big Bay trails yet (bad dog).

Fit Strip: Neil groomed Tuesday the 14th.  The Fit Strip is groomed weekly or as needed following heavy snow events.

Snow Bike South Trails: Trails remain in very good shape with a light few inches of weekend snow.  You will see some drifting in open areas.   Friday night trails were groomed including Main Loop, Enchantment, Mt. Marquette/Blue Loop, and Black to Border Grill. Heads up as there are still some water hazards on jeep trail descent and a few scattered locations.

Snow Bike North Trails: All sections of North Trails are solid with good tractions. Drifting snow on trails near open areas were mostly cleared.

THE FORESTVILLE TRAIL HEAD CHALET IS OPEN! Chalet hours are 7 AM to 10 PM and rental equipment is available between 10 and 4.  Space is still limited during construction but come in and enjoy the fire and company.
