Grooming March 27, 2020

GROOMING WILL CONTINUE  as long as we have snow!  See more details in the WTLGR below.

Today’s report is brought to you by YOU, the members of NTN:    The staff and volunteers at NTN are proud to work for such a group.  They wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for you. Your membership and contributions  make it all possible.  The NTN has been a force for good in a turbulent time.  You should be proud.

Trail memberships can be purchased on the web site.  Please visit www.noquetrails.org and follow the links.  You too can be feted in an up coming grooming report.

SPRING SCHEDULE IN EFFECT:  Trail Head is closed and the privy is locked.  Practice save social distancing and enjoy the beautiful skiing.

Forestville:  Andy Bully groomed all trails from Forestville to Co Rd 510.  Andy cautioned to watch for the one bare spot at the top of the last (first if you are skiing Mead by pass clockwise) major hill.  Also, watch for a few areas where the classic track set poorly due to freezing old snow.  The full groom was moved from the normal Friday night due to forecast warm nights ahead.  Trails froze hard last night so grooming will be excellent.  The smart guys/gals will ski before noon.

Way too Long Grooming Report:

As you know NTN is grooming as weather permits.  Weather did permit grooming last night but the rest of the six day forecast is not so favorable.  Above freezing temperatures mean the groomers will be parked for some time.  Great skiing will continue but it will be weather dependent.  We will continue to offer commentary on ski conditions and the price of Darjeeling in Kalimpong.

After all, skiing isn’t all about skiing (I know, sounds stupid, but bear with me).  I remember fighting my way down some almost un-skiable snow on Glacier Peak but the weather, view and overall experience were excellent.  So too was my ski yesterday.  The smart skiers went before noon.  Kelly sent in a picture of the bare spot on Mead bypass so the gauntlet was down.  I was tied up in the morning (but if you wriggle your wrists and are willing to dislocate your thumb you can almost always get out.  I fear next time they will use duct tape).  In the woods I jumped an eagle and an unkindness of ravens in a heated disagreement about how best to share a deer carcass.  It was fairly fresh and blood is so red on snow.  Still, they had been able to pick it down to the fully exposed rib cage.  I expect a coyote was involved in the discussion at some point.  Skiing was good but, again, not being the smart kid, trails were soft. I did not get to ring the bell at 510.  Regardless, it was a great day on the trails.  Look at it today! I cant believe I have a 10 AM meeting.  Regardless, it will be a great day to be outside.  Enjoy

Check out the second climb on Chiwagi yesterday afternoon.  Note the dearth of tracks.

Saux Head:  All trails were groomed and track set Saturday.  This morning will be on the freeze end of the thaw/freeze cycle but temperatures will climb quickly.  Skiing is forecast to be best between 9:30 and 12:45.

Big Bay Pathway:    Groomers went out yesterday but we did not hear how it went.  The transformed snow is hard to groom into classic tracks so they may be thin.  Big Bay trails are for classic skiing and snowshoeing.  Big Bay is a great place to get away and breath some fresh air.

Fit Strip:  Grooming has been suspended.  Expect some bare spots.

Snow Bike Trails:  Groomers went out yesterday to smooth high traffic areas before last night’s hard freeze.  All trails should be in excellent shape this morning.  As it gets warm riders and foot traffic are asked to avoid leaving deep ruts or foot prints.  Riding will be great for weeks to come provided everyone uses commons sense when it is warm.

South Trails: Groomers went out yesterday to smooth high traffic areas before last night’s hard freeze.  All trails should be in excellent shape this morning.  As it gets warm riders and foot traffic are asked to avoid leaving deep ruts or foot prints.  Riding will be great for weeks to come provided everyone uses commons sense when it is warm.

As of Thursday morning 3/26: We groomed Mt Mqt, Main, Enchantment and Oak Hill last night just before refreeze.

Riding should stay really good today and Friday morning. After that, overnight temps look pretty ugly, so ride while it’s good!

Some icy patches starting under the hemlocks and on Jeep trail below the bridge. Jeep trail got Jeeped pretty good at the bottom, be cautious on the descent.

Check out the grooming equipment and trail quality from yesterday’s groom.

North Trails: The Pine, Penstock, BLP Rocks loop was groomed Thursday afternoon in anticipation of the overnight freeze.

As it gets warm riders and foot traffic are asked to avoid leaving deep ruts or foot prints.  Riding will be great for weeks to come provided everyone uses commons sense when it is warm.
