GROOMING WILL CONTINUE  as long as we can!

Today’s report could be brought to us by YOU:    I will cut to the chase. Our grooming budget is shot.  At a time we would normally have scaled back, we actually increased grooming.  With Yoopers starved for save social distancing activities, NTN stepped into the breach.  Our new state of the art Piston Bully groomer turns boiler plate ice into race ready corduroy; and it has been doing it day after day when overnight sub freezing temperatures permit.  In mid season, a Ginzu skate lane clean up of cold snow will work for days; not so in spring thaw/freeze conditions.

I hope you did get out yesterday.  It was one of those days about which one writes home.  Every kilometer of trail from Forestville to Co Rd 510 was buffed to perfection.  It was fast but never icy.  The classic tracks looked like so much formed plaster of Paris.   I saw Tom on Bagwagi.  He thought maybe he had woken up at a U.S. Ski Team Spring Camp.  Wally went flying by on classic skis, sporting sun glasses, sans hat.  All the heads of State were out yesterday.  Light air, full sun, warm temperatures and hard snow.  These things don’t just happen.

We would like them to continue to happen but we could use your help.  There was no grooming last night as it was too warm.  We can only make these magical days if it was cold enough the night before.  Sunday night may be cold enough but almost surely Monday will be a hard freeze.  With the significant base, we may well have quite a few more opportunities for such magic as you experienced yesterday.

You may follow the link   https://noquetrails.org/product/nordic-fund/ and contribute or feel free to contact the office or reply to this grooming report.  No contribution is too small.  A full Bully groom costs about $500 so we can’t do it with the loose change and gum wrappers under the sofa cushion.  Any contributions equal too or above the cost of a daily groom will get feted in this space as one of our Spring of Covid-19 Rescue Team.

Rest assured, we will do what we can to keep skiing great and will use any contributions to their fullest potential.

See you out there

Trail memberships can be purchased on the web site.  Please visit www.noquetrails.org and follow the links.  You too can be feted in an up coming grooming report.

SPRING SCHEDULE IN EFFECT:  Trail Head is closed and the privy is locked.  Practice save social distancing and enjoy the beautiful skiing.

Forestville:  No grooming last night as it was too warm.  Morning skiing may be good but please stay off the trails if you are sinking into the base more than 2”.

Way too Long Grooming Report:

I had conference calls scheduled for 9 and 10 yesterday morning.  The 9 o’clock call required I be at my computer; ugh.  So, I figured I would miss this truly remarkable say of skiing.  As it turned out, the 9 was rescheduled and the 10 call was fine on ear buds; you just put it on mute and avoid talking during the major climbs.  I know all the dead zones by now and was only dropped once on an hour long beating meeting.

Saux Head:  All trails were groomed and track set Saturday.  We are on the thaw end of the thaw/freeze cycle.  Skiing may be quite good if the trail is still firm but please stay off the trails if you sink in more than 2”.

Big Bay Pathway:    Groomers went out Thursday the 26th but we did not hear how it went.  The transformed snow is hard to groom into classic tracks so they may be thin.  Big Bay trails are for classic skiing and snowshoeing.  Big Bay is a great place to get away and breath some fresh air. We are on the thaw end of the thaw/freeze cycle.  Skiing may be quite good if the trail is still firm but please stay off the trails if you sink in more than 2”.

Fit Strip:  Grooming has been suspended.  Expect some bare spots.

Snow Bike Trails:  Groomers went out on the 26th to smooth high traffic areas. We are on the thaw end of the thaw/freeze cycle.  Riding may be quite good if the trail is still firm but please stay off the trails if you sink in more than 2”.

South Trails: Groomers went out on the 26th to smooth high traffic areas.  We are on the thaw end of the thaw/freeze cycle.  Riding  may be quite good if the trail is still firm but please stay off the trails if you sink in more than 2”.

As of Thursday morning 3/26: We groomed Mt Mqt, Main, Enchantment and Oak Hill last night just before refreeze.

Riding should stay really good today and Friday morning. After that, overnight temps look pretty ugly, so ride while it’s good!

Some icy patches starting under the hemlocks and on Jeep trail below the bridge. Jeep trail got Jeeped pretty good at the bottom, be cautious on the descent.

North Trails: The Pine, Penstock, BLP Rocks loop was groomed the 26th.

As it gets warm riders and foot traffic are asked to avoid leaving deep ruts or foot prints.  Riding will be great for weeks to come provided everyone uses commons sense when it is warm.
