April 22, 2020 Grooming Report

| Forestville: Lori and Nick Ginzu groomed the skate lanes to 510! Hit Animoosh on way out…hoped to clean up on trails on way back but had to limp home with snowmobile problem. So, Animoosh looks to be the route.

Check out the beaver pond just east of the upper Bismarck crossing. Crust skiing looks to be spectacular. Rob shared both pictures and comments regarding “…conditions on the way up to 510. I classic skied and the track was good all the way to 510. Maybe one rock and few bare spots around the 19 k hill. The most amazing thing is how the skate lane froze up without any ruts west of the current grooming. I think with the temperatures tonight and tomorrow the ski to 510 is reasonable for skating or classic. It seems like the best zone today would have been getting it done before 11-12.
The downhills are manageable but the blazing April sun makes for some slow spots that seem to be a challenge. Especially, when they occur after a well shaded fast downhill.
Unfortunately, while coming home around the 12 k marker there was a group of bikers on the Noque trail and some of the side trails. I politely told them it was a ski trail and please don’t bike on the ski trail! I also spoke with our groomer regarding the bikers. He was out on the machine with the ginzu. The bikers left some ruts but maybe they will groom out?

Way too Long Grooming Report: I don’t have any ski pictures from yesterday as there was surf up. I expect many had the same dilemma; what to do? As explained in previous episodes, shoulder season drives some hard decisions. Lacking a film crew, for yesterday’s session we ran the “look-what-I-found” picture above. Spring surfing requires what is actually called, “frigid” wax. Anyway, in the wax storage locker, I came across several items that have not seen the light of day in a while. All three items have a story and they may be covered during a slow news day to come. However, today I call attention to the Sea and Ski from the 1960s. It is SPF 6. In the day, “6” was about as high a factor as one could find before going to the 100% zinc oxide. Anyway, surfing was great (even if the surfer was not). I am reminded of an old Jerry Lopez interview, “… the best surfer in the lineup is the one having the most fun.”.
Saux Head:
Several bare spots have developed so grooming has been suspended for the season unless the Mother’s day storm warrants it.
Big Bay Pathway:
Grooming has been suspended for the season unless the Mother’s day storm warrants it.
Fit Strip: Grooming has been suspended. Expect some bare spots.
Snow Bike Trails:
North Trails: The Pines, Penstock, BLP Rocks, Collinsville to trail head loop groomed last week. Trails will be ridable in low temperature for the next a few days.
South Trails: Grooming is done on the South trails for the season.
