April 25, 2020 Grooming Report

Today’s report is brought to us by the NTN Grooming Staff and Volunteers.  If you see any of the NTN Staff or volunteers, say thanks.

Please help us continue to groom as long as possible.  You may follow the link   https://noquetrails.org/product/nordic-fund/ and contribute or feel free to contact the office or reply to this grooming report.  No contribution is too small.

Trail memberships can be purchased on the web site.  Please visit www.noquetrails.org and follow the links.  You too can be feted in an up coming grooming report.

SPRING SCHEDULE IN EFFECT:  Trail Head is closed and the privy is locked.  Practice save social distancing and enjoy the beautiful skiing.

Forestville:  Only limited grooming last night due to poor grooming conditions.  Lori and Nick had planned to groom to 510 but soft snow made for impossible conditions.  They turned around at Grand Central.  Skiers will find some problematic conditions where they did attempt to groom.  With high temperatures in the 50s the power lines will be bare at the end of today. Dirt is very hard on the equipment so grooming is suspended through the forecast unless the Mother’s Day storm changes plans.  However, with the exception of under the hemlocks and exposed south and west facing exposures, all trails have a very good base.  Freezing overnight temperatures through the forecast period means good skiing will continue into May for sure.

Check out Eric’s picture from yesterday.  He reports:

Skied out Animosh and back on Noque from doctors parking lot around 10ish. Good base remains on 90% with only a hand full of bare spots under the Hemlocks and on the south faces.
I’ve been measuring snow depth off the edge of the groomed track all winter at the Migizi-Animoosh intersection it’s down to 25” from a high of 39”.
Ski on!

Check out Kelly’s pictures from the Mead by pass yesterday.  He reports no social distancing issues to report.  Note the smooth surface.  Warm dry days cause sublimation of the snow removing even the hint of tracks.  Cold overnight temperatures sets up the surface for ideal crust skiing.  Note the thick base at the water hazard approximately 1k west of the junction with Noque’.

Way too Long Grooming Report:

One hopes to go out like Ray Borque or maybe (sort of) home town boy does good, Dallas Drake.  There are other great examples of players that go out on top but don’t discount the long stellar careers  that miss their final shot. I know there are die hard Packer fans that won’t forgive Brett Favre for coming out of retirement to play for the Jets and then the hated Vikings.  I too am a die hard Packer fan but appreciate his need to play.  There are far more examples of players that stayed at the party too long and didn’t go out on top; there can be only one winner per season.  Missing the mark on your final shot does not lessen the total effort in the slightest but rather shows a dedication that few can muster. If it were easy to be the best everyone would do it. Just because they make it look easy, doesn’t mean it is easy. We have just completed over five months of world class groomed back country skiing.  I know Lori wanted to send us out to Co Rd 510 one more glorious time but it was not to be. It was not for a lack of an incredible effort.  We all owe her and the entire grooming team a great debt of gratitude for a job incredibly done.  Now we have about a month of crust skiing.  Who will win the Last Ski to 510 competition? Who will win the coveted, Last Ski of the Season competition?  Remember, there are fabulous prizes for the winners (and participation ribbons for the rest).  See you out there.

Saux Head:

Several bare spots have developed so grooming has been suspended for the season unless the Mother’s day storm warrants it.

Big Bay Pathway:

Grooming has been suspended for the season unless the Mother’s day storm warrants it.

Fit Strip:  Grooming has been suspended.  Expect some bare spots.

Snow Bike Trails:

North Trails: I am very interested to see some pictures of the North trails.  I expect most of the lower elevation is bare.  However, I have no idea how it is near Forestville.  There is a lot of snow in the woods.  However, narrow hard pack trails often tend to become a crown of icy snow and impossible to ride.  Please send a picture and any comments on related injuries.

South Trails: Grooming is done on the South trails for the season.
