We received the following last night from Bob.
I ran into Greg Nelson and Sten at the 510 Trailhead today. They had just skated toward Marquette as far as I groomed (near snowmobile trail at 19k) and did okay so tell Sondo it is skiable but a bit thin and watch out for rocks. I was concerned it was too thin and Rocky and might be dangerous to ski. Other than that I’m totally okay if Sondo post it on his grooming report.
The above is verbatim from Bob (except for spelling corrections from Siri (or whatever voice to text service used.) We are including the raw data for several reasons. First, each editor adds a layer between the reader and the primary source. Second, we should all enjoy the pattern of life. This is part of the early season experience. In some seasons an early dump of snow jumps us into mid-season conditions. In those years we get cheated out of this rock ski season. Part of the rock ski season experience is the discovery of the first skiable snow and how it is treated and interpreted.
I am anxious to get out but fear today is not the day. After all, a drive all the way to Co Rd 510 would take almost 30 minutes and my time budget is tight. That extra hour for the round trip pushes me out of the time window. I expect in some parts of the world a 30 minute drive to ski is not out of the ordinary. Lucky us. If either of you get out please do send pictures.
