Grooming December 19, 2020

Tom sent this photo yesterday and said it was well worth the drive. Early season snow is like working your way up to a nice bike. I remember a lifetime ago visiting my brother in college. I was a teenager and had never seen a nice bike. I didn’t know this and thought all bikes were the same. Sure there were stories about people with $400 Fujis but I didn’t believe them. I saw it in the bike shop but figured it was just eye candy. Then, I saw Dick’s Cinelli. It didn’t even look like my Schwinn Varsity. “Cino” was fresh from his gold medal in the ’60 Rome Olympics when he designed many of the modern road bike innovations. So, I asked, “what makes it so nice?”. Of course, being less than half the weight is obvious but his answer confused me. He said, you have to ride a cheep bike for a while to really understand what makes a bike “nice”. Getting a big dump of snow in the early season cheats us out of this appreciation. It is called “mid-season” conditions for a reason. Last night’s fresh snow is just enough to move the needle on conditions but not so much to make us forget, this is early season. I expect skiing will be “Good” to “Very Good” but have no first hand evidence. I’ll be making the long drive (30 minutes) to the Co Rd 510 trail head so tomorrow’s report will have more accurate data. I do apologize for failing to answer the bell yesterday but some things are more enjoyable than skiing. I got to watch the face of a 2 year old as she learned the joy of sledding.

See you out there,

Sondo
