Grooming February 17, 2020

Today’s report is brought to you by North Paw Veternary:  The nice folks at North Paw Veternary sponsor a station at the South Trail Head.  Without the support of folks like North Paw Veternary we would not have the excellent trails we have come to expect.  If you see them, say thanks.

Trail Builder sections and Snow Bike trail sections are available.  Please visit www.noquetrails.org and follow the links.  You too can be feted in an up coming grooming report.

Way too Long Grooming Report:

Riding the South Trails made me feel like Pedro Tafur in 1436 as he pondered the Roman Aqueducts.  I can’t imagine the organization and effort required to create such an infrastructure.  So too I fear misunderstanding its very nature.  As I rode on a section of Carp River trail (see picture) I could only marvel at the view across to Marquette Mountain with the river raging below.  I think this section is the result of snow shoe packing but, again, am but a traveler in a strange land.  In any case, the base was firm so riding was great.  However, the false edge caught me more than a few times.  Attempting to put your foot down in hip deep snow is best avoided.  I learned to treat the snow like molten lava and kept my fee in the clips regardless the consequences.  Note to self, fall up hill.  Regardless the snow snakes, wow, was it cool.

Saux Head:  Saux Head last reported grooming as of last Sunday.  Some snow and drifting has occurred since then.

Justin skied Saux Head yesterday the 16th  and offered the following comments. “There is about 3” of powder on top of a mostly solid base, but some pole plants were soft. The hemlock areas have a lot of debris. The rest is decent with occasional sticks, leaves and needles on the trail. All-in-all, a good classic ski, but the skating wasn’t too bad either.  Here is a shot of the best it got and a chunkier spot at the bottom of The Plunge.

Big Bay Pathway:  Denis is going out to groom today . If you do ski Big Bay please let us know how you found the trails.

Fit Strip:  Neil last reported grooming  last Sunday.  If you do ski the Fit Strip please let us know what you found.

Snow bike trails format comments:

We are still working on optimizing this section for readability and usefulness.  I apologize for failing in both but it is not for a lack of the attempt.
