Way too Long Grooming Report:
It appears you are both stumped. Randonee, regardless comments from telemark snobs in the wine bar, is not French for “I can’t telemark turn”. Self-conscious Telemark challenged skiers everywhere have now eschewed the term in favor of a made up word that lacks flavor and panache. Foreign words, even foreign sounding words make everything so much cooler. Think of Haagen-Dazs; extra credit if you can work in an umlaut or other diacritic mark. Our language has been cheapened ever since Bob Alpinetouring invented his nifty release binding. My first skis had cable bindings with two locking clip positions. The cables would stay in both clips to keep your heel locked for true alpine skiing. Of course there was no forward release and the toe release was problematic at best. The resulting failure mode even had a medical term; the “boot top break”. Remember, everyone would sign your cast? I kept my autographed plaster cast for years. Man (gender neutral term) has been working to optimize binding systems in earnest for over a century. One needs to have a free heel and a removable climbing skin for the assent but the descent is another story. Sure, giant bowls of bottomless powder are a joy to link telemark turns but there is always a narrow chute or cliff drop on the way. With one of my new year’s resolutions to have fewer sports related surgeries, I’ll lock my heel when I feel the need, regardless the opinions espoused in the wine bar. In any case, it is hard to imagine anyone would have a toy chest lacking Randonee gear. People fly the world over hoping to tell of a bottomless powder day when we have it right here. Check your ski room (Joe) and make the necessary corrections before word gets out. Afterall, who doesn’t need another capital intensive, weather dependent sport?
Saux Head: Groomed and track set Friday morning. Tim reports , we have a ski heaven now!
.
Big Bay Pathway: Big Bay pathway was groomed today. Meditation and Hidden Grin have single track set. Reggie reports Skiing on Meditation and Hidden Grin is very good. Bear mountain trail has been rolled but has too many wet and low spots. We won’t be grooming it for a little while.
Fit Strip: Niel groomed and track set all trails Saturday. Skiing will be good for the rest of the year.
Snow Bike South Trails:
South trails groomed and cold temperatures are likely firming things up but please use low pressure. Trails are likely still soft.
Snow Bike North Trails:
Volunteers were back out yesterday, incorporating 2” of fresh snow into the soft base from this weeks major snow event.
Both the Upper and Lower Loops plus Ramblin Man and Wildcat were groomed again and the base is firming up nicely and should be in good shape for Saturday.
In addition, the Oxbow, Cedars and EZPZ to the river were also groomed.
Plans are to snowshoe Mildcat tonight and groom it first thing in the morning- please wait until at least noon to check it out to give the base time to set up.
Trails are in good shape, but fairly soft: low tire pressure and snowshoes will help keep them in good shape for the users coming later.
