March 25, 2020 Grooming Report

GROOMING WILL CONTINUE!  See more details in the WTLGR below.

Today’s report is brought to you by the Staff and Volunteers of the NTN:  We WILL CONTINUE TO  have excellent skiing every day.  It has been great since mid November due to the tireless efforts of the NTN staff including Lori and Kellie in the front office as well as Andy, Doug, Jeremiah, Roxin, Tim, John, Craig and Mike (others too I am sure) in the saddle and an army of volunteers to numerous to mention.  I am so sorry to miss anyone and I am sure I have.

Trail sponsorships are available.  Please visit www.noquetrails.org and follow the links.  You too can be feted in an up coming grooming report.

SPRING SCHEDULE IN EFFECT:  Trail Head is closed and the privy is locked.  Practice save social distancing and enjoy the beautiful skiing.

Forestville:  Groomers are parked due to warm overnight temperatures.  Heavy snow and below freezing temperatures tonight will have the groomers busy.  Expect great skiing tomorrow.  I should add, it may be quite good today if the base is firm enough to support your skis.  Enjoy please stay off the trails if you are sinking more than 2” into the base.

Way too Long Grooming Report:

NTN’s Executive Director Lori Hauswirth is a remarkable individual and tireless advocate on our behalf.  The Governor’s COVID-19 Executive Order ended grooming on all trails.  Lori made the case that in fact, grooming was a good thing for the community in this stressful time.  The groomers were not interacting with anyone and skiers and cyclists are outside getting needed exercise while practicing save social distancing.  It was a strong case but the order stood.  The Governor has a great deal on her plate as do the directors of all relevant agencies.  Still, Lori was tireless and was able to turn the ship of state in what can only be called blinding speed.  The ruling was revised the very same day it went into effect.

We had no grooming today because of warm overnight temperatures but a snow storm is forecast for tonight!  Imagine what we would be doing tomorrow but for Lori and the NTN Staff.  If you see Lori or any of the NTN staff or volunteers, give them a big thank you and a (virtual) high five from six feet away.

Snow bike riding on the anchor ice is spectacular.  Of course, like glacier travel, there is risk of falling to your death so be sure to look for soft spots.  In any case, the optics are spectacular.  I was looking for a spot to drop in a kayak but we are maybe a week too early for the anchor ice kayak/SUP season.

Saux Head:  All trails were groomed and track set Saturday.  Warm temperatures today may have the trails too soft to ski.  Please stay off the trails if you are sinking in more than 2”.  Classic skiing may be possible on warm days when the skate lane is too soft;  bring both.

Big Bay Pathway:    No report at press time.

Fit Strip:  Grooming has been suspended.  Expect some bare spots.

Snow Bike Trails: All trails were in excellent shape Tuesday morning the 24th.  Jeremiah had just groomed the top part of granite point, main, enchantment, oak hill, jeep trail. Over the weekend all trails were groomed.  The north trails were also groomed over the weekend.   Today’s warm temperatures may have some trails too soft to ride.  Lower elevation trails may be firm but deep snow areas may be too soft.  Use good sense and proper tire pressure.  Pizza cutters are for pizzas.
