Forestville:  In a less then choreographed effort over 5 hours tonight Nick ginzued and tracked ponds to 510 while I (Lori) hit Animoosh, Migizi, Mukwa, Gookookoo, Pappasay, Boozhoo, Zhing, Waaban, Chiwaji and Migizi with the second ginzu (also tracked).  Conditions vary greatly but are improving with the snow and each groom. Caution on Migizi and Gookookoo as uneven terrain combined with some tip catching brush adds a bit of a challenge. Hopefully not too many groomer errors but there are a few  🙂

(A note on reporting: When detailed reports are sent via text/email, we like to minimize editorial efforts.  The best information comes from the person closest to the snow.  In this case, Lori and Nick.  We will only add parenthetic information such as pronoun alterations, spelling or typos to aid in understanding. ed).

Additional Forestville comments:  Please note the Co Rd 510 trail head in the background and do a happy dance.  The entire system is groomed and in great shape.  I skied the Wagis yesterday and it was wonderful.  It had only been rolled but the base was fairly smooth and fairly firm.  Of course, with still a fairly thin base the poll plants are very firm.  It was quite fast so I did chicken out and dumped speed on the Talladega down hill. If groomed edge to edge and race ready it is still adrenaline inducing.   At my advanced age I mainly go down Talladega because the hill back out is so wonderful.  I want to hear from the dare devils that skate into the pitch and grab a tuck when the snow is fast.

Saux Head: All trails will be groomed and track set this morning.  All trails were rolled yesterday so the base will be firm.  I did ski the entire system Tuesday and it was in great shape.  Expect excellent skiing today.

Snow Bike Trails:  The entire north system groomed w the SnowDogs on 12/30 Trails ARE a little soft as of Wednesday afternoon,  Heavy foot traffic near access spots has those areas somewhat rough Grooming for 12/31 TBD. The South trails require more snow for grooming to be warranted.  We will post an update as soon as we hear.  I have not been South since the recent snow so please do drop a note if you have first hand information.

WTLGR: I do hope you got out yesterday.  It was spectacular.  Here at Grooming Report HQ we provide information on yesterday’s conditions to allow mathematically inclined skiers to perform Bayesian statistics on reporting. That being said, yesterday was spectacular.  Not only were the  trails smooth, fast and wide, I nailed the clothing.  You may think that is a small thing.  As a life long winter and alpine enthusiast, you would think the cold would not be such an issue.  However, I am convinced Dante got it way wrong.  If there is such a place, its going to be cold, and I’m going to be there for a long time.  So, when I hit the clothes just right it is better than even getting the wax right.  After all, I only care about fast skis if I hope to hang with someone (or better yet, put a hurt on someone).  Clothes can make an afternoon wonderful and you know it in the first “k”.  Now, I am not like the stallions out there.   I remember Wally coming back to the trail head hyperthermic.  People like Wally go out cold so as to allow for serious exertion to keep warm.  Being more of a clothes mule rather than a clothes horse or stallion, I always have a pack with an extra jacket or two and can shed a layer of two without having to leave it on the trail side.  But getting it just right so you work hard and don’t over heat and don’t have to change layers is a bigger deal than hitting the was for this skier.  So, for future reference, with mid 20s and a good breeze, its two thin layers, one medium and a wind-stopper vest.  Of course, a thin balaclava and flip up xc ski goggles are part of the get up.  I recognize the look is dorky at best but…

See you out there,

Sondo
