Forestville Trails:
The Trail head is now open and staffed!
Warm temperatures kept the grooming fleet parked again last night. I expect trails remained firm today but please stay off if you are punching through the base. Falling temperatures will bring us to below freezing by early afternoon. Any ruts will be boiler plate by sundown. Groomers will assess the situation tonight. A loving god will bring us an inch of snow and conditions will again be race ready. Of course, if they miss on the “new snow” thing, he/she has already given us a toy shed full of fantastic grooming equipment. One way or another, skiing will be great by Friday.
Ok, so maybe you didn’t ski yesterday, but you should have been here Tuesday! I fear I undersold Tuesday’s conditions. Granted, I did say skiing would be good and the thaw had not harmed our base but, after Monday’s thaw I fully expected to find a rather hard pan surface and glazed classic tracks. Instead, outside of the first three “k”, trails were unglazed with snow on top of a hard smooth base. Our sun never gets very high in December and virtually all of the trails are well shaded. I hadn’t really planned on running to 510 but… Beyond 16k the only evidence of Monday’s thaw was a glazed west facing section near 23k. With all the major hills facing east, skiers that rang 510 bell were treated to one of those magical days; comfortable temperatures, light air, sunshine and groomed trails in the back country!
