Grooming February 27, 2020

Today’s report is brought to you by Benjamin, Sydney, Steve and Mackenzie Kuhl:  Benjamin, Sydney, Steve and Mackenzie are Trail Builders on the Noque’.  Without the support of folks like the Kuhls we would not have the excellent trails we have come to expect.  If you see them, say thanks.

Trail Builder sections and Snow Bike trail sections are available.  Please visit www.noquetrails.org and follow the links.  You too can be feted in an up coming grooming report.

Forestville:  Andy is running the Bully on trails inside 14k after a significant snow event. By noon he may have all trails inside 14k groomed but going may be slow so I have only listed the first trails to be groomed in the list below.  Depending on your exact location you have 5” to over 8” of new fluffy snow on your driveway.  Up to 5” more snow is forecast today.  Trails will be a little soft but the Bully will get them in skiable shape.  It will be beautiful so a little soft will be ok in my book.

Way too Long Grooming Report:

I know the critic’s corner metes out (likely well-deserved abuse) whenever I say, “It was really special…”, but it was really special yesterday.  You should have seen it.  I would have taken a picture at the beaver pond near 22.5k if Siri would do what she is told; but no. As you would expect, when the scenery is spectacular she says, “I’m having trouble with the connection.”.  So, you either have to take off your glove or go through the whole password thing and camera thing with your nose.  Being at the far end of an out and back and already a little chilled, I kept skiing.  Now I have buyer’s remorse because it really had to be seen to be believed.  I hadn’t built a bell ringing at 510 into the time budget but that is how intoxication works.  You know, a little more… a little more, etc.  I started skiing in an inch of fresh powder on top of bully groomed trails; it was awesome.  Then, at the Pine Plantation, grooming was done but the new champagne powder was over your ski tips and just the proper density to make the icy base a non-factor. When skiing is excellent all the way to 510 I think there is an obligation to continue.  Skiing was fast and silent.  You could occasionally see a “bow wake” in front of your ski tips but otherwise it looked like you were floating on a cloud.  It was so light there was no fear of hooking a tip.  At the top of the hill at 19k it actually speed up even though it was now 4”+ of same day, non-wind packed snow.  At the beaver pond you couldn’t even see the ghost lines from old classic tracks. Making first tracks it was hard to know where the trail ended and the back country began.   In wide areas I occasionally drifted off the groomed track.  The steady snow and light air made for a most memorable experience, regardless the critic’s howls.

Saux Head:  All trails were groomed and track set Saturday the 22nd but 6” to 8” of new snow will have the groomers busy.

Big Bay Pathway:  Denis groomed Monday the 17th but 6” to 8” of new snow will have the groomers busy.

Fit Strip:  Neil groomed all trails Monday the 24th but 6” to 8” of new snow will have the groomers busy.

Snow bike trails comments:

I expect 6” to 8” of new snow will have the groomers busy.  Lower elevation trails both north and south may be ridable.  If you do get out, let us know what you find.
